A few years ago, I read Julie Murphy’s adorable book Dumplin’ about an overweight teenager with a huge personality. I loved Dumplin’ from the first chapter and eagerly awaited the sequel to Dumplin’ since I finished the book.
Dumplin’ is currently trending right now thanks to movie version that Netflix recently released (which is great, by the way!). If you’ve seen the movie and loved it you should check out Puddin’ by Julie Murphy. While the characters overlap, you could easily read Puddin’ even if you have not read Dumplin’.
Puddin’ was released in May of last year. It took my a few months to get to it but I was so excited to jump into this book. It did not disappoint!
Puddin’ tells the story of Millie, an overweight, aspiring television journalist. Her mother has sent her to fat camp every summer for most of her life. Millie wants this summer to be different. She dreams of being accepted into a journalism camp even though she knows her mother won’t approve and society’s ideals and expectations are stacked against her.
As Millie is formulating her summer plans and preparing to apply to the summer journalism camp of her dreams, an unfortunate event occurs that forces Millie to work with the most unlikely person, Callie Reyes, cheerleader, thin, popular, and everything Millie is not. Millie and Callie slowly and a bit reluctantly begin to form a friendship neither of them expected.
Puddin’ is the story of two unlikely friends whose worlds have collided. What can the girls learn from each other? Can they help each other build confidence and see things from a different perspective?
Julie Murphy has done it again with Puddin’. Her writing and characters are wonderful. If you are looking for a sweet but funny read, try Puddin’!
